Text and Texture: Calligraphic Marks and Nature

Yukimi believes that calligraphers can best create unique and beautifully expressive strokes by hand and arrange them as letters and with harmony if those strokes are influenced by forms found in nature and then uniquely adapted by the calligrapher.

In this workshop, Yukimi will demonstrate various lines and marks using different tools, some found in nature, as well as those made using both calligraphic and other writing instruments, to explore and find preferable tools that each student might find appealing. Then students will imitate dynamic forms in nature and natural objects to develop alphabets that correspond, writing texts with those letterforms influenced by the natural textures. During the workshop, basic design, layout and composition, as well as usage of color and various mediums will be presented, and students will bind all exercise sheets in a book form.

Session Recordings: Recordings of all sessions will be provided within a few days following their conclusion, and they will remain available for two months following the last class.

Sharing Student Work on a Private PSC Page: PSC will create a private “page” exclusively for this workshop. As a key component of the workshop, students can share their work following each session. Importantly, Yukimi has agreed to review and comment on posted student work.

Handouts and Other Details: A full set of workshop handouts and all other course details, including the Zoom link to the first online sessions, will be made available to admitted students about a week before the first session.
