In this class, we will study the sumptuous and elegant letter style of Gothicized Italic. Written with a broad-edged pen, it is a traditional alphabet with surprising elegance. It combines the rich and condensed feel of Blackletter with the flowing quality of Italic. This hand is very effective for wedding invitations, envelope art, and formal documents.

We will cover the miniscule and majuscule letters, numerals, and hopefully find time to squeeze in a small project!

Sue has always been fascinated by letters. In the 1970s, luck and love intervened when she moved from Central Illinois to Corvallis, Oregon, and found herself in the middle a calligraphic renaissance. She was thrilled to have found her niche. Her calligraphy teacher at Oregon State University, Allen Wong, nurtured her talents. She got her BFA in Advertising Design.

Sue taught Basic Italic at Linn Benton Community College, then worked as a freelance lettering artist in commercial arts. She took time to become a jewelry designer, a project manager for a large corporation, and raise a family. After years of adventures in career and family, lettering is again Sue’s full-time passion. She loves breathing life into letterforms and animating words with a pen.
