In this one-day workshop you will learn to make hand drawn Lombardic Capital letters, how to decorate them, and how to paint them. This style can be used to create complete works of art all by themselves or it can be used for elaborate decorative lettering. You can expect that by the end of the workshop you will have completed or be close to completing a finished decorated Lombardic capital. Skills that will be addressed are drawing letters, basic design, working with watercolors, and creating a color scheme.

The workshop will be taught by Cora Pearl, professional Portland lettering artist and teacher of lettering arts. Cora started studying calligraphy at age 11 and has been doing calligraphy and hand lettering ever since. She has a BA in Art and Art History from Oberlin College. Cora works as a full-time calligrapher and teacher of lettering arts. She teaches calligraphy and hand lettering at Portland Community College and teaches independent workshops, classes and private sessions, and year-long classes in design for lettering art. She has taught at several calligraphy conferences including Letters of Joy, IAMPETH, Letterfest, the International Calligraphy Conference, Letters California Style, and TypeCon. Cora also does calligraphy commissions in addition to her teaching. She is passionate about teaching and values a holistic approach to learning based on building trust and safety in the classroom environment.

Pre-Class Zoom Tutorial Meeting

To make certain that every student benefits the most from the online experience, Cora is going to conduct a pre-workshop meeting to teach students unfamiliar with Zoom how they can best participate in and receive the benefits of an online classroom. Even if you’ve used Zoom in some respect already, Cora is requiring that all admitted students who have not already utilized Zoom in an interactive classroom setting with her attend the pre-class Zoom orientation meeting. It will be conducted on Tuesday, May 12th at 7:00 pm. You can expect the meeting to last no more than an hour. If you are admitted to the class, you’ll receive a notice about how to sign into Zoom for the tutorial meeting.
