Capitals As Text And Tiny Paintings As Graphical Elements

Great for beginners and the experienced letterer alike, Beth’s workshop explores the use of text capitals and creation of texture in chosen texts. Beth will teach this with small broad-edged and pointed pens, through the manipulation of letter spacing, color changes, and other design decisions. She will also examine how the act of writing creates rhythm and movement. In later sessions, students will create tiny painted landscapes as a graphic element. And Beth will instruct how to make them meld beautifully with student-selected text through the magic of color theory.

Time permitting, additional topics to be explored will include optimizing workspace, tools, and materials; developing layout options, including a variety of strategies for planning and making guidelines; painting and color theory.

Session recordings: Recordings of every session will be provided within a few days following the conclusion of each session and will remain available for two months following the last class.

Facebook Page: PSC will create a private Facebook page exclusively for this workshop. As a key component of the workshop, the Facebook page will be a place where students can share their work following each session and, importantly, where Beth will have the opportunity to review and critique student work.

Handouts and Other Details: A full set of workshop handouts and all other course details, including the Zoom link to the first online sessions, will be made available to admitted students about a week before the first session.
