Drawn to Letters

In this newly created workshop, lettering artist and graphic designer Elmo van Slingerland from the Netherlands will instruct students to design, sketch and draw letters, experiencing the gray area between writing and drawing while concentrating on building up form. Various techniques and materials will be used, ranging from pencil, broad-edged nib, pointed pen to the brush. Letterforms will be based on roman minuscules, capital and cursive styles. Students will be led through numerous adaptations, ranging from serif to sans, playful to more strict, bold/light, big/small, narrow/wide, smooth and rough.

Weekly assignments will explore the use of distinct materials and their application to several different purposes.

Session recordings: Recordings of every session will be provided within a day after the conclusion of each session and remain available for two months following the last class.

Facebook Page: PSC will create a private Facebook page exclusively for this workshop. As a key component of the workshop, the Facebook page will be a place where students can share their work following each session and, importantly, where Elmo will have the opportunity to review and critique student work.

Handouts and Other Details: A full set of workshop handouts, any guidelines that Elmo may use and all other course details, including the Zoom link to the first online sessions, will be made available to admitted students a week or more before the first session.
