Calligrapher, book artist, photographer, midwife & author

Patricia’s Story

Patricia Edmonds was a self-taught calligrapher who became enamored with the Copperplate script as a young woman and learned it by studying it in a book.

An award-winning calligrapher and book artist, Patricia became a teacher of calligraphy to many students, including Tim Leigh and Larry Whitson, opening their eyes to the beauty and excitement of calligraphy. Patricia taught workshops for Green Heron Book Arts in Forest Grove, PSC, Portland Community College, Valley Catholic High School, Letters of Joy, several international calligraphy conferences, the All Oregon Calligraphy Conference, and Menucha. She also served as treasurer for PSC for several years.

She enjoyed creating  birth announcements, greeting cards, and wedding invitations, and she exhibited her work in local shows. Her marbled paper decorates books around the country. A skilled photographer, Patricia loved searching out all kinds of birds and photographing them.

Patricia was a certified midwife for over four decades and attended over a thousand births in this region. For fourteen years she was the editor and publisher of Birthing, the newsletter of the Oregon Midwifery Council.

Patricia authored three publications:

  • The Placenta: A Guide to Examination
  • Into My Hands: A Birth Record Book for Midwives
  • The Birth Guardian: A Record Book for Doulas
