“Engrossing by any other name (calligraphy) is still engrossing to me. I love it by whatever name and become engrossed in my work every time I put pen to paper.”
Cliff’s Story
Clifford D. Mansley, Sr. was born April 26, 1927 in Philadelphia, PA. He enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17, serving aboard the USS Leyte Gulf and the USS Randolph. After his military service, he studied at The Zanerian College of Penmanship, mastering the art of engrossing. Cliff’s passion for the arts extended to music as well, where he received formal voice training that fueled his enthusiasm for opera. After graduating from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania in 1951, he was recognized for his academic achievements with elections to the Beta Gamma Sigma National Honor Society and the Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity.
For over 80 years, Cliff dedicated himself to the Boy Scouts of America, both locally and nationally. Deeply aligned with the organization’s core values, he worked tirelessly to inspire young men and boys to develop strong character. Following his tenure with the Cascade Pacific Council, he founded the Protestant Committee on Scouting, emphasizing the principles of “Duty to God” and reverence within the Scout community. His significant contributions to Scouting earned him the Silver Beaver, the Council’s highest honor.
Cliff believed in giving back and was therefore active as a fundraiser for non-profit groups. He was twice president of the Association for Fundraising Professionals-Oregon & SW Washington Chapter and encouraged the recognition of those who give generously.
Alongside his beloved wife, Jean, Cliff established Heirloom Artists, a calligraphy and art studio that specialized in creating exquisite hand-lettered designs for various institutions, including hospitals and colleges, as well as for private clients. This venture marked a fulfilling second career for Cliff after his retirement from the Boy Scouts. His work was more than aesthetic; he believed that words held profound meaning, and he sought to express heartfelt sentiments through his art.
Cliff was an active member of the Portland Society of Calligraphy, where he embraced opportunities to connect with calligraphers, often welcoming visitors during conferences and events. He served as PSC president from 1996-97 and held various other positions on the board throughout the years. In 2014 he was awarded the title of a PSC Honorary Lifetime Member.
