Street Painting in Portland

Presenter: Zach Yarrington

One does not need to look far in any urban area to find graffiti. Some graffiti is attractive, eye-catching and full of energy—some not so much. Portland is no exception. Graffiti or public mural art, adorns almost every vacant exterior wall in inner southeast and northeast Portland.

What can calligraphic artists learn from street art and street artists?  Our June meeting will help us answer this question.

About the Artist:

Our presenter, Zach Yarrington, has done multiple large-scale murals in the Portland area. Most of his wall murals include letter-based work implying a message, subtle or not so subtle. He has done public art murals for TriMet, the Regional Arts and Culture Council and with an ad hoc public arts organization “Forest for the Trees “.

Yarrington has a BFA in Digital Arts from the University of Oregon. In his public murals he has been influenced by traditional American sign painting, “DIY” punk culture, and his surroundings. He strives in his work to make the environment “a better place to be.”

Zach will share his personal journey into and through the Portland art scene. The discussion will include the challenges of large mural painting, language as an art form, and some “tricks and tips” of the trade. Zach also looks forward to answering your questions about this popular art medium.
