Calligraphy Sale to honor Jaki Svaren and Christine Colasurdo

PSC lost two beloved calligraphers last year, and each left behind many treasures. They asked their items be sold to benefit scholarships in their names. Jaki requested that the proceeds go to the PSC Jaqueline Svaren Calligraphy Scholarship  Christine was also a writer and published author, and requested that proceeds go to The Christine Ann Colasurdo English and Creative Writing Scholarship at Portland State University.

This sale is an opportunity to view the art of these two talented calligraphers, and mingle with each other. If you would like to purchase, please bring two shopping bags to separate their items. Bring cash or two checks, as items will be checked out separately. No credit cards.

Most calligraphers know Jaki for her famous book, Written Letters, now republished. She taught at Portland Community College, and with Lloyd Reynolds helped found our society. But many have not seen her work. She was famous for her calligrams, horses, and of course her Bone script. One can see and purchase many large and small pieces in a multitude of scripts, expressing her love of life and sense of humor. More than 300 pieces will be on sale: from small pieces, prints and postcards beginning at $1, to framed pieces at $80 to $100.

Anyone who has a copy of PSC’s Fifty Years booklet has seen Christine’s talent as a writer, editor, and an artist. She studied under Jaki Svaren and taught both calligraphy and writing at Multnomah Arts Center. Her books will be on sale, as well as her note cards. Also for purchase are over 200 pieces of art, both brush and pen, ranging from $1 to $250 for a framed piece. Many special calligraphy books, journals, and calligraphy supplies: quality paper, 14K gold nibs, vintage Estebrook and other pointed pen nibs, Osmiroid and other fountain pens are also for sale.

Masks are optional. For further information,or to volunteer, contact Marianne Nelson at programs@portlandsocietyforcalligraphy.com.
