About this Workshop
Inundated, as we are by huge varieties of typefaces in modern communication, we expect that our letters made by hand should achieve the same kinds of uniform quality.

However, the aesthetics of hand lettering are different than those of type design and our letters never seem to reach that precision. By studying manuscripts written by scribes for whom their hands were part of their daily routine, we learn to let that go, and to look for vitality in our own lettering. The transition from Roman letters to lower case covers hundreds of years, and many of these manuscripts have been scanned and are available online.

In this workshop we will work a few examples from around 8th century uncial manuscripts, some written at a comfortable pen angle and another at a flat angle with a good deal of pen manipulation. We’ll also look at many other uncials, studying them for variety and consistency. And finally, we’ll find ways to modernize them for use 1500 years later.
