Portland Society for Calligraphy is proud to present calligrapher, Annie Cicale, and her presentation: “Artists’ Books: Vessel for Word & Image”.

From Annie: “The craft of calligraphy has its heritage in the book, and making books has been a large part of my work. My first practice sessions consisted of collected pages, well laid out, which were then bound into journals. In a book, I am able to develop fluidity in a hand, try design ideas and solve problems on the fly. I’ve also made many small books, presenting poems or prose in a few pages rather than as a broadside. A book can be sat with and enjoyed over time, it can tell a longer story. It is portable and doesn’t have to be framed! My books range from simple commissions of poems and wedding vows to complex tomes with many ideas collected together. In some, I’ve also worked on illustration and printmaking techniques, and I’ve found ways to work image and text together.”

Please join us for a well-illustrated slideshow of the many approaches Annie has taken as well as some of the problems she has solved when creating her artists’ books. Annie will have on hand a few of her books so we can see the final results in person.
